General facts

L'Alliance suffragiste Sainte-Jeanne d'Arc a été fondée en tant que société suffragiste des femmes catholiques du Royaume-Uni, le 25 mars 1911. Après l'octroi du droit de vote à la femme au Royaume-Uni et le changement de nom de la société, l'œuvre de l'Alliance s'est peu à peu élargie et a porté sur diverses activités internationales. Un nombre toujours croissant de féministes catholiques d'autres pays venant grossir les rangs de l'Alliance, il a été décidé en 1931 - année du cinquième centenaire de sainte Jeanne d'Arc - de constituer un Conseil international chargé de s'occuper de la question au point de vue international. Les questions qui ont tout spécialement retenu l'attention de l'Alliance sur le plan international sont la nationalité de la femme mariée et la situation des femmes africaines. HB 1938: St. Joan's Social and Political Alliance was founded as the Catholic Women's Suffrage Society in Great Britain on March 25th, 1911. After the granting of woman suffrage in Great Britain and changing of the name of the Society, the work of the Alliance was gradually enlarged and included various international activities. As more and more Catholic feminists in other countries came into the ranks of the Alliance, it was decided in 1931 — the year of St. Joan's Quincentenary — to form an International Council to deal with international aspects of the work. Questions that have particularly occupied the attention of the Alliance in the International Field are the Nationality of Married Women and the position of African Women.
